ASCRS Refractive Day

This program will focus on understanding patients’ lifelong refractive journey, from the benefits of corneal refractive surgery and phakic IOLs to presbyopia treatments and refractive cataract surgery. Learn how to develop specific skillsets for each stage of refractive surgery while cultivating general knowledge and awareness of the lifelong refractive journey.

All 2026 ASCRS Refractive Day Sessions
RD-1
Session I: Executive Orders: Debating the Future of Phakic (Corneal and IOL) Refractive Surgery
Moderators: William F. Wiley, MD, ABO; Nandini Venkateswaran, MD, ABO
This session will take on a Presidential debate theme. Presenting the decisiveness of executive action, focused on impactful technologies like corneal laser surgery and phakic IOLs. Topics will cover patient selection, technical execution, and managing outcomes. Each segment channels the rhetorical flavor, stakes, or personalities of a classic U.S. presidential debate.
RD-2
Session II: The Steinert Lecture – The Evolution of Refractive Surgery: From Fringe to Forefront
Moderators: William F. Wiley, MD, ABO; Kendall E. Donaldson, MD, MS, ABO
RD-3
Session III: Legislating Vision – A Disciplined Approach to Pseudophakic (Lenticular) Refractive Surgery
Moderators: Daniel H. Chang, MD, ABO; Priya M. Mathews, MD, MPH, ABO
Representing the legislative process, this session explores how pseudophakic (lenticular) refractive surgery can benefit from a structured understanding of how (pseudoaccommodating) Depth of Field IOLs perform clinically. Applying this knowledge in a patient-centered approach with thoughtful preoperative preparation and disciplined postoperative management will provide the best possible outcomes for each patient.
RD-4
Session IV: Judicial Innovations – Interpreting Outcomes and Emerging Technologies
Moderators: Kendall E. Donaldson, MD, MS, ABO; George O. Waring IV, MD, FACS
Like the judiciary interprets the law, surgeons must interpret clinical data, outcomes, and new technologies. This session tackles forward-thinking innovation and data-driven decision-making.
RD-5
Session V: “We The People” – Video-Based Case Review (with audience voting)
Moderators: Dagny Zhu, MD, ABO; Marcony R. Santhiago, MD, PhD
In this high-energy closing session, top surgeons present complex cases “on trial” before a panel of expert judges. Expect clinical debate, practical insights, and an engaging wrap-up to the day.
